What is the Best Bed Height, High or Low?

For those of you who are short, I’m sure you’ve had to jump on a bed or use a step stool to get a little help getting up. The research on Autism and sleep made me realize how vital low beds are to even more people.

So, how high off the ground should a bed be? Is there a reasonable distance between the floor and the bed? And if you had to choose between high beds and low beds, which would win?

What is the Best Height for a Bed?

Most people don’t think about bed height. But there is a way to make someone feel better. Most of the time, the best height should be the same as yours, which means that taller people should have higher beds, and shorter people should have lower beds.

How High Should an Older Adult’s Bed Be?

We lose our grace as we get older, so a bed should be at a good height so that getting in and out of it is as easy and stress-free as possible. If the bed is too low, it can be hard on your joints and muscles, and if it’s too high, you might have to jump up, which isn’t always possible.

Using the idea from above about matching a bed to your height, measure where you feel most comfortable sitting. You could use a favorite chair for this, making it much easier to sit and swing your legs in and out of bed.

The average height of an adult’s knees is between 16″ and 24″ off the ground, so a bed that falls between these two numbers should be fine. If unsure, choose a bed near the top of this range. A high bed is easier on your joints than a low one, and a step could be used to get in and out of it.

How High Should a Toddler’s Bed Be?

The product information for our children’s beds will tell you how big they are and what ages they are best for. But toddler beds are usually low to the ground so that as they get used to not sleeping in a cot, they don’t fall or roll out of bed.

Of course, older kids who are used to sleeping in a bed have many more options at different heights, such as mid-sleepers, cabin beds, and bunks, which all have a ladder.

Can a Bed’s Height Be Made Taller?

If your bed is too low, you should get a new one. But if you can’t afford to do that right now, you can fix the problem temporarily by putting risers under the legs of the frame. Please be careful when you use these because they will make the bed less stable.

Are There Other Things to Think About With Height?

Before buying a modern bed, we suggest considering where it will go. For example, if you plan to put it in an attic room or a room with a slanted ceiling, ensure enough room for the headboard.

If not, you might have to change how the room is set up. We’ve seen people put their beds 10 to 15 cm away from the wall because they didn’t think about these things before they bought them.

It would be best if you also thought about how you will store your things. Ottoman and divan beds are often higher than regular frames, so they have a lot of storage space. These higher beds might be a good choice if you don’t have much floor space.
