Dove Cameron winner of VMAs Best New Artist at 2022
Dove Cameron won the Moon Person award for best new artist at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (August 28). This was her first win at the VMAs, even though it was her first time being nominated.
Cameron was given the award by Avril Lavigne, who won in the same category in 2002 for her breakthrough hit “Complicated.” Cameron said she was “so floored and so moved” to win this year. She then gave the award to “all of the queer kids out there who don’t feel like they can take up space and be the full version of who they are” and thanked them for their help in “getting an overtly queer song onto mainstream radio.” She was talking about “Boyfriend,” which was her biggest hit in 2022 and was about trying to get a woman to leave her male partner.
Cameron was one of six people who were up for the award, and he was one of the three finalists, along with the Italian rock band Mneskin and the Korean boy band Seventeen. The singer-songwriter praised her fellow nominees, saying that some of them were some of her “all-time favourite artists.”
This spring, “Boyfriend,” which reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, was Dove Cameron’s biggest hit. Cameron sang a smoky version of the song and her new single “Breakfast” on the VMAs’ pre-show. It was her first time ever performing on MTV’s biggest night. She also gave the award for song of the summer to the VMAs’ co-host and opening act, Jack Harlow, for his No. 1 song on the Hot 100, “First Class.”
